Church and Monastery of St. George, St. Paul’s Church.
The monastery was founded at the end of the ninth century by Saint Paul of Xiropotamia, son of Emperor Michael I, and was dedicated to Saint George the Victorious. Another tradition says that on this site, before the arrival of Saint Paul, there was an ancient monastery in honor of the Entry into the Temple of the Most Holy Theotokos, founded by a person named Stephen during the reign of Emperor Constantine the Great. In the ninth century, the monastery was located on the lands of Xeropotamos and was perhaps attached to it.
The Church of the Virgin Mary is a Coptic church in Old Cairo, above Bab El-Maa. It is also known as the Hanging or Hanging Church
The church is one of the oldest Christian churches in Egypt. It dates back to the third century AD. Previously, there was a Roman fort on this site, which served as the foundation. The building took on its modern appearance in the 7th-9th centuries. In the 11th century, the residence of the Patriarch of Alexandria was located here.
The church got its name due to its high location above the bastions of the Roman fort and the water gates.
Inside there is an old iconostasis made of Lebanese cedar wood and inlaid with ivory.
The church contains more than 100 icons, the oldest of which dates back to the eighth century. The church also houses the relics of many saints. The Coptic Museum is located nearby.
